2013: A Year In Review

2013 has come and gone.  Seriously I think it is the fastest year yet.  Here are some of the Peterson happenings:

Brian - 2013 was a good year for Brian.  Work was good.  Sometimes too good.  This summer Brian pretty much work 7 days a week.  Needless to say, we didn't get to doing much but made the most of it.  Brian is called as an 11 year old scout leader and has learned how to deal with 11 year olds.  haha.  He has a great companion leader and together they are having a lot of fun.  He was able to experience his first 11 year old campout, and I am not sure he is eager for another one.  haha.  Brian spent the year enjoying living where we do in Millville.  He loved being able to hop on the 4wheeler at our house and ride up to two canyons and enjoy the mountains.  He has been able to do more hunting than he did the previous year.  He had an enjoyable summer working our garden, learning how to irrigate (and listening to his wife complain about irrigating in the middle of the night), and realizing how big our yard was trying to mow it and keep it looking good. 2014 should bring more fun for Brian with all I have mentioned above.  His goals for the year are to finish organzing the playroom and the boys room (toys with shelves), attending the temple more, and being more tolerant with his children.

Tammy - 2013 was a busy year for me.  The spring had me working with Matthew's teacher once a week and getting to know all of Matthew's friends in Kindergarten.  We also planted a garden this spring and enjoyed every second watching it grow to a full on feeding frenzy for us.  This summer brought on weeding the garden, a job I truely loath.  I also learned how to irrigate.  Let me tell you, this is a hard job.  Especially when you are doing it by yourself in the middle of the night.  I am not a fan of the dark and so it took all I had to be out there to make our lawn green.  But I survived!  I also took over the main leader job with our Girl Scout troop.  Nothing too much change there because I have some wonderful ladies as co-leaders.  This fall brought on Matthew going to school all day long and leaving me and Jacob to love each other more.  I have been volunteering more at the school whether in my kids classrooms or with the PTA.  I really am loving being at the school and might look into doing it partime when Jacob starts school.  This winter has been a worldwind (see crazy time post).  2014 will be just as busy and I am going to love every minute of it.  Some of my goals for the year are to exercise more, eat healthier, attend the temple more, and be a bit more patient with my children.

Kimberly - 2013 was a fun year for Kim.  She made many new friends in her first year at Millville.  She enjoyed the year dancing her heart out at LaShars on one of their performing teams.  Her performing team capped off last year with two 1st place performances at Lagoon.  Girl Scouts is always a joy for Kimberly and she earned many badges in her final year as a Brownie.  So many badges that we had to buy another sash to put them on.  This summer, Kimmy started piano with our friend Nicole and she is really good.  I am very impressed at how quickly she picked up on piano and is playing great.  I do hope she continues.  This fall Kimmy started back at LaShars on the Jr Company performing team and is soooo happy.  She is a great dancer and loves every inch of it.  Kimmy is in 4th grade this year with Mrs. Justesen and just loves school.  She is a smarty and I hope she continues to love school with as much passion as she has now.  Kimmy loves Activity Days at church and has enjoyed me being her Primary teacher.  Only a couple more years and she moves to a Young Woman... YIKES!  2014 will be another fun year for Kim.  More dancing, playing piano, enjoying friends, etc.  Some of her goals for the new year are to play piano more, be nicer to her siblings, listen and obeying better to her parents, and try to keep her room clean better.

Matthew - 2013 brought on some new adventures for Matthew.  This spring he finished up his Kindergarten year and was a fabulous student.  He also tried Spring soccer for the first time.  He loved every second of it.  The summer brought on playing and more playing.  The kid could live outside if I let him.  He enjoyed soccer, baseball, football fun with everyone in the family.  He also accomplished a goal and that was learn how to ride his big green bike with no training wheels.  Now he cruises everywhere on that bike.  This fall Matthew started 1st grade with Mrs. Kendrick and Mrs. Purser.  He loves being at school all day and loves lunch.  He has made some great friends and enjoys Math.  Matthew also played fall soccer with 2nd graders and learned a lot and even scored a goal.  He was so happy.  2014 will be an even better year for this kid.  He is full of fun and life and I am sure he will be running at top speed all year long.  Some of his goals for 2014 are to play more soccer, sign up for baseball, learn to be nice to siblings, and listen and obey parents better.

Jacob - 2013 was a fun year for Jacob.  His 2 year old spunk thrived all year long.  He enjoyed every moment he could fit into each day.  Jacob found a love for playing outside and his daddy.  He could spend every day playing with daddy outside if we let him, and daddy could.  Jacob found a love for PBS shows this year.  I don't mind because they are wholesome good shows for him to watch.  He is a smart kid and working hard on learning his letters and numbers.  Recently he has decided he is too big and doesn't need naps anymore.  He also grew out of his toddler bed and moved to a big boy twin bed.  He had a great 3 year old birthday.  2014 should be even more fun for Jacob.  Some of his goals for the new year are to be potty trained (hopefully within the first month of the year), start preschool this fall, and just play and enjoy life.

Duke - 2013 was a playground for Duke.  He loved his big yard to play in.  He runs all over the backyard, barking at anything and anyone that runs by.  Duke also enjoyed the garden a bit, even though it was closed up to him.  He found a way in.  Duke found a love for the irrigation water.  His favorite time (no matter what time of day it was) was when the gates were all shut and the water was shut off and he could run thru the puddles and splash and roll and get soaking wet. 2014 will bring on more fun for this silly dog.  Hopefully will bring on a big more exercise for our mini bear.

We hope you all have a wonderful New Year.  Happy 2014!

Crazy time for me

So in an earlier post I mentioned about a crazy time.  Here is what happened.

November 22nd was like any other day.  I was getting ready to go to school to do my cougar school pride Friday and then head to do a Girl Scout meeting.  5 minutes before walking out the door, I got a phone call from my dad.  He told me that my mom had fallen down the stairs and broke her leg.  He was a bit upset in his phone call and he didn't have much news for me because the paramedics were still there figuring out how to get her up the stairs.  Talk about a blow to me.  I was on the phone with my dad for all of a minute but what he had to say took me by surprised.  When I got off the phone, I cried uncontrollably and dropped to my knees asking my Heavenly Father to look over them and help them in any way they could.  I normally have much to say to my Heavenly Father but I have to admit, I was a little lost for words in my prayer.  I am grateful that He can feel what I was feeling.

Well I composed myself and headed to school to do my job.  After school, I lost it again telling my children what happened to their Grammie.  I lost it again when my sweet hubby ran outside to give me a hug before I had to run to Girl Scouts.  I don't know why I was super worried but I just was scared for my mom.  I lost it all the way to Girl Scouts talking to Kimmy but got myself back under control for my meeting.  During my meeting, my dad called me to tell me what the latest update was.  I did lose it again for a minute but didn't want to scare all the girls so I composed and went back to work.

Let me tell you what happened to my mom.  She was carrying some bags downstairs and her pant legs were a bit too long.  The pants got caught under my mom's shoe and she missed a step because of it.  When she came down hard on the next step, her ankle popped.  This is an ankle that she broke 20 plus years ago and you always hear people say they never get strong again.  Well when her ankle popped, she went down.  And when I say down, I mean she took a tumble down the stairs.  When my dad ran to see what happened, he found my mom crumbled at the bottom of the stairs.  He noticed her leg looking normal till he noticed my mom's shoelaces of her shoe touching her bum.  He looked closer and noticed her bone was sticking straight out of her leg.  Immediately he told her to stay put and not move and not to look around.  He then called the paramedics to come.  He also called the Davis's, their wonderful neighbors, to see if they could move the van and help the ambulance know where to go.  A couple cops showed up first.  One cop my parents have known for years and he was a little grossed out at what my mom looked like.  The paramedics showed up and were a bit worried about moving anything so they called the doctor on duty to come look and tell them how to proceed.  She came quickly and was a great doctor.  She told the paramedics that they couldn't do any more damage than my mom did so they just needed to straighten her out and put an air cast on her and get her to the hospital.  One of the paramedics worked with my mom when my mom was a CNA and he was joking around with her and was really sweet.  My mom did go into shock a bit but she was a trooper.  She honestly never looked at what happened and that was probably a good thing.  They got her to the hospital and called the Orthopedic surgeon in Poky and sent him the xrays.  He responded right away that he would be to Soda in a couple hours to perform surgery on mom.  When he looked at the xrays, he realized that mom did some major damage to her tibia (broke it in many places).  So this was going to be a long processes but he knew he could do it.

So now that you know what happened, you can understand why I was upset.  No one wants to see their parent go thru something like that.  Dad kept us updated on mom's condition and surgery that first night.  I, in the meantime, was keeping all my mom's siblings updated.  The next day I was able to talk to my mom and just hearing her voice help my nerves.  She was doing ok.  They did understand this was going to be an extremely long process.  Sunday after church, we ran up there for a couple hours to see her.  Seeing my mom getting herself out of her bed and heading to the bathroom, all without using her 1 foot (which was surrounded with a metal cage), helped me feel so much better.  I knew my mom was a strong woman but I couldn't imagine her getting thru this.

So this changed all the plans for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthday, etc.  We were going to be making more trips to Soda to see how we can help.  I also needed to help my parents anyway I could by being their legs.

These past two months have been crazy... lots of running around and traveling.  I don't mind.  Anything I can do to keep my parents happy, keep my mom's spirits up, etc.

We had a great Christmas and I do hope I am helping my parents.  The latest update on mom is her skin around the wound wasn't healing, it was dying.  This was to be expected so they cut around her wound and did a wound vac on it.  It is a good thing and helping out a lot.  But while in her leg cleaning stuff out, the doctor found infection.  After testing the infection, they found it to be Mercer... a pretty serious infection.  Immediately, the dr got my  mom on medicine to try and get rid of it.  Mercer is pretty bad and could take up to 7 months to get rid of.  Apparently her body has been a carrier of it for awhile (could explain some of the sickness my mom has had for a bit).  The good news is they have been doing the medicine for 2 weeks now and it isn't getting worse.  So a minor setback and on Jan 13, mom goes back to the dr to see what the next step is.  Could be another surgery to clean up some more stuff, could be a surgery to take out the plate in the leg to help the infection heal, could be getting the metal cage off of her... kind of up in the air.  Just have to wait and be positive.

I have to say, I am super grateful for the prayers that have been answered by Heavenly Father concerning my mom.  The power of prayer is strong and that was no more evident than when this happened and many people prayed for her.  Many quotes from the scriptures come to mind during this trial and all I hope is my mom keeps her spirits up and remembers this too shall pass.

Family Pictures

We (finally) had some family pictures taken by my friend Nicole Norris.  We had a great time taking pictures and I can't believe how awesome all the pictures turned out.  These are just a few of my favorites!

42nd Week of Pictures - Sunset

We have some beautiful sunsets where we live but I truely love what they do to the mountains behind our house.  I you can see the sun is just on the tippy tops of the mountains.

Jacob's 3rd Birthday

I can't believe my little guy is 3 years old.  Where has the time gone!  I still remember the day he came into our lives here on earth.  He was so sweet and cute.  Even though he was my baby, I still refer to him as my middle baby.  Kimmy was my easiest baby, Matthew was my hardest baby, and Jacob was somewhere in the middle.

He is the cutest thing and I enjoy every minute of him.  He has decided he is too big for naps, he outgrew his toddler bed and graduated to a big boy twin bed, he is more stubborn than his siblings, and he still loves to cuddle.  He is smart.  He loves watching PBS and following along with what they do.  He loves working on Preschool papers and I hope to get him into a preschool this fall.  His only downfall is he is too stubborn to potty train.  haha.  But we will work on it.

Happy birthday Jacob Lewis Peterson!
